Wales carted off the 2007 Cecil Persaud Under-15 limited overs cricket competition when they defeated Utivlugt last Sunday at the Canal Number Two Sports Club ground.
Batting first, Wales were dismissed for 110 in 32 overs with Chandrika Persaud, 36 and Roger Balram, 24 the main contributors.
Rameeze Ally picked up four wickets for 34 runs in his allotted eight overs for Uitvlugt.
In reply, Uitvlugt only managed 57 all out in 20 overs with Daniran Latchoo top scoring with 15.
Brian Deodat was the main destroyer for Wales bagging six wickets for 24 runs from seven overs.
The winning and runner up teams received $20,000 and $10,000 respectively.
The competition kicked off on April 21 last year with the following teams: Cultural Cricket Club, Canal Number Two Sports Club, Wales, All Youths Sport Club, Independence Sports Club, Versailles Sports Club, Meten-Meer-Zorg East, Uitvlugt, Cornelia Ida, Western United and Crane New Stars.
West Demerara Cricket Association’s (WDCA) executive Lalta Digamber, who was present at the presentation ceremony, expressed gratitude to the sponsors of the competition, Cecil Persaud of Canal No. Two, who has committed to continue with sponsorship for the competition.
After the game cricket gear donated by Food For The Poor Inc. was presented to some of the teams which participated in the competition to get them equipped for the new season.
Meanwhile, quarter-final action in the Third Annual New Line Aqua Farm 40 overs-a-side competition will continue shortly having been held up by the rain since March.
West Coast Demerara power houses Meten-Meer-Zorg East, Zeeburg and Cornelia Ida have all booked places in the quarter-finals.
They will be joined by Shamrock, new comers La Jalousie and the youthful Crane New Stars. The West Bank Demerara teams in the mix are Wales and Cultural whose patron is sponsor of the competition, Salim Azeez.
The Hand-In-Hand second division 50-overs-a-side competition will also commence shortly.
WDCA’s President Anand Sanasie, and Competitions Committee Chairman, Digamber, are expected to meet with clubs soon.
