Nicolette Fernandes finally made it to Paraguay on Sunday morning after missing her connecting flight the day before, because of a delay out of Miami. Having been seeded one in the ladies draw she received a bye into the quarterfinal round and duly dispatched Naar Agustina Gomez of Argentina 9/3 9/1 9/2 to book her place in the semifinals. She is scheduled to come up against the tournament’s number four seed, another Argentine, Antonella Falcione. That match is expected to take place today at 18:45 local time.
In addition to the individual event, the South American championships also features doubles as well as team events. This will mark Guyana’s first appearance at this event, but due to financial constraints Fernandes will be the only Guyanese athlete competing. This means that Guyana’s participation will be limited to the ladies individual event.
