The Central Rupununi Heritage Sports Committee (CRHSC) will this week run off their 10KM race as part of the Amerindian Heritage Month celebrations.
Speaking to Stabroek Sport, committee member Mark Rodrigues said sponsorship was not readily obtained but Bounty Farm through their Chief Executive Officer Peter DeGroot came through. The company, he added, provided prizes for the first to third place in both male and female senior categories of the event.
According to Rodrigues, the CRHCS is now trying to resuscitate all sporting disciplines in the Region Nine and they will be looking forward to working with other sporting groups. This meet is scheduled for September 15-20 and many persons have shown an interest in taking part.
Rodrigues is of the view that “only during Amerindian Heritage Month are they remembered.” When it comes to corporate sponsors he is hopeful that more will come onboard to provide incentives for the persons who take part in the different sport disciplines.
He heaped praise on Bounty Farm for the sponsorship of the 10KM run as they were one of the few sponsors who came forward. He added that they were other sponsors who provided trophies for winners in the youth category.
There will be trophies also for persons under a certain age as well as prizes for the youngest finishers in both male and female categories.
Meanwhile Rodrigues is hoping to have this event incorporated in the yearly activities and become a staple part of Amerindian Heritage Month activities.
