Ovena Braithwaite is still hoping that Gafoors representatives would return to take measurements for a home as promised and the Ministry of Human Services made contact with her yesterday and promised to render some assistance.
The woman’s heart-rending story was carried in the Tuesday edition of Stabroek News. Last Saturday a storm blew off the roof of the one-bedroom shack that the pregnant mother of two had called home.
In June her husband had mysteriously disappeared and life for the family was in turmoil. The woman, who suffers from spells of dizziness due to problems with her eyes, had burned herself twice while cooking on a wood fire.
Yesterday, a donation of a kerosene stove and foodstuff was made to her by a Guyana Power and Light employee. Since her story was published outpourings of sympathy and assistance have come and she has expressed her gratitude.
