Dear Editor,
SN’s editorial of Tuesday, September 7, ‘Some friendly advice’ revealed an anachronistic socio-political mindset which may have underscored the lack of vision for which the architects of the GNS must be credited.
Major General (rtd) Singh, DSM did his best with an ill-conceived adaptation of Tanzania’s approach to relieving the socio-economic discontent created by a bloated urban populace. In the early ’70s the PNC sent someone to understudy their brand of National Service so that a similar scheme could be made operational here.
It would be interesting to have a forensic audit, if any, published so that the current generation could judge for itself its usefulness or otherwise.
Yours faithfully,
B Richmond
