Alika Morgan, Janella Jonas, Letitia Myles and Carlwyn Collins had nothing short of an excellent day as they were victorious in each event they competed in at the 2008 National Youth/Junior Championships at Enmore Sports Club ground on Sunday.
Morgan competed in the girls’ under-20 category and swept the 5000m and 1500m events with times of 21:11.60s and 5:31.60s ahead of Silver Bullets Leanna Doris with times of 26:01.30s and 6:15.30s respectively.
Morgan also won the 800m in 2:41.70s ahead of Police Sports Club’s (PSC) Shebekie Prince who ran a time of 2:56.70s.
Myles contended in the girls’ under-18 category and won the 400m clocking a time of 1:04.05s while Keyandra Zephyr of Upper Demerara and Ianna Graham of PSC finished second and third with times of 1:05.01s and 1:06.40s respectively.
Myles also won the 200m in a time of 27.40s ahead of Graham (28.00s) and Tiffany Carto (28.30s).
Collins of PSC, was dominant in both the male under-18 200m and 400m where he clocked times of 24.10s and 53.90s respectively.
Meanwhile, talented Janella Jonas of Rising Star, won the girls’ under-18 800m and 1500m races with times of 2:30.60s and 5:24.00s respectively.
Patrick King of PSC carted of the male junior 400m in a time of 54.50s ahead of Ian Campbell of Running Brave (54.90s) and Afeez Samad of PSC (55.20s).
King was not so fortunate to record a double as he placed second in the junior Male 200m behind Campbell while Ruralites Alton Seaforth finished third.
Leota Babb missed out on a double also. As she won the girls’ junior 100m ahead of her PSC club-mate Nadine Rodrigues with a time of 12.90s while Rodrigues ran 13.40s but Rodrigues turned the tables when she defeated Babb in the girls’ under 18 200m.
Ricardo Martin of Rupununi Track Club with a time of 2:03.30s defeated Jonathon Fagundes (2:04.20s) and Learie Campbell (2:07:90s) then there was a twist of fate in the 1500m as Fagundes defeated Martin in a close race.
In other results Lisa Bowman of Silver Bullet outdid the field to sweep the girls’ under-18 javelin, shot putt and discuss events with distances of 23.12m, 8.67m and 21.37m.
Deja Smartt of Ruralites won the girls’ under-18 100m in 13.60s and PSC’s Tiffany Carto finished second with 13.90s.
Chavez Ageday also of Ruralites claimed the Boys’ Under-18 100m in a time of 11.60s while Kevin Bayley (11.90s) and Ryan Caesar (12.00s) finished second and third respectively.
