Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle placed a 27-year-old Canal No. 2 man on a bond to keep the peace for six months after he admitted stealing just two mangoes.
Lennox Samaroo of Canal No. 2, West Bank Demerara pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to him.
On September 13 the man stole a quantity of mangoes worth $1,000 from a tree owned by the Guyana Chronicle.
“Ow your worship I de hungry and I just pick two mangoes and eat,” the man told the magistrate repeatedly.
The prosecution said that at approximately 8 am on the day in question Samaroo went to the compound of the Chronicle newspaper and stole the mangoes. He was seen in the tree by a guard.
“Is true worship…I tellin’ you is true…I just take two green mangoes, green mangoes your worship cause I de hungry bad bad,” Samaroo said.
He was placed on a bond to keep the peace for six months and warned not to take things that didn’t belong to him.
