Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle on Tuesday sentenced a man to two years imprisonment for breaking and entering two homes and stealing a quantity of items when he appeared before her at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Clive Drakes, 39, of 2 ½ Miles Bartica pleaded guilty to two counts of breaking and entering and larceny.
On August 24 Drakes broke and entered the home of Sharon Jupitor and stole a quantity of items totalling $81,000 in value. Drakes also broke and entered the home of Michael Newton on September 4 and stole $359,000 in household items.
The prosecution stated that on August 24, Jupitor left her home to go out and upon returning she found that the back door of the house had been opened and subsequently she discovered some items missing. She made a report to the police station about the incident.
And on September 4, Newton left his home after securing his storage room at the back of the yard. When he returned home he found one of the windows had been opened and some of the items were missing from the room. None of the items stolen from Jupitor and Newton was recovered.
However Drakes stated that he did steal the items because they were outside the houses. He said that he went into the interior and when he got back he saw the two individuals from whom he stole the items and returned the articles to them.
He went on to say that upon giving back the items he was brutally assaulted and was admitted to the hospital for medical attention. He pointed to several stitches in his head from a wound that he had sustained and also displayed several bruises about his body which he said resulted from the beating. “They do this to me and nothing ain’t happen to none a them, but I get arrested.”
Magistrate Robertson-Ogle sentenced him to two years imprisonment on each charge but stated that the sentences were to run concurrently.
After pleading with the magistrate to give him only one year Drakes was escorted out of the courtroom by police officers.
