Three on a bike is two too many

Dear Editor,

Loved your picture of the three boys on a bicycle (SN 16.9.08, page 1).  There is one thing I disagree with − there should only be one boy on the bicycle.  A bicycle is a two-wheeled form of transport with one seat.  If you have two people on a bicycle it has two seats and is known as a tandem.  The practice of having more than one person or indeed a grass-cutter, a bag of rice, a tank of gas or a large bottle of water is dangerous.  When you see people cycling with someone on the cross-bar the cyclist has to pedal with their legs at an unnatural angle of 90% and that makes them unsteady.

They not only have their legs at funny angles but their arms have to go around someone in order to steer. I would also love someone to explain why so many cyclists ride in a blackout with dark clothes and no lights;  do they think that drivers have such fantastic vision that they don’t have to take any responsibility for themselves or their passengers?

Yours faithfully,
Kayleigh Burgess
