Alleged car thief, Drepaul Persaud, who was remanded when he appeared in court on Monday was yesterday granted bail when he returned before Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle.
The 36-year-old man who allegedly stole a car worth $1.9 million, property of Dyndial Jodhan and one Motorola radio set worth $100,000 which belonged to Sunil Mohan was granted bail in the sum of $100,000 on each charge. Persaud of Lot 1 New Angle, Canal Number Two, West Bank Demerara had pleaded not guilty to the two counts of simple larceny on Monday.
Persaud’s attorney, Paul Fung-a-Fat, had said that his client met two men prior to the incident who said that they had been in an accident and were selling the items. Fung-a-Fat said Persaud had already handed over a quantity of cash to the two men and when the police arrived they fled the scene. Fung-a-Fat had said that his client is a taxi driver and was driving his own car on the said day and as such was not attempting to steal any car.
The prosecution had objected to bail stating that the man has been identified in other matters which occurred at West Bank Demerara.
Yesterday in court the attorney said that the car and the set and been recovered; his client was in jail for one week now and is the sole breadwinner for his family.
Prosecutor Denise Griffith told the Magistrate that another charge had been pending for the man but she did not see anything forthcoming from the police. She did not object to bail.
The car in question was stolen from in front of the Georgetown Public Hospital in New Market Street and was recovered one hour later. Mohan discovered thieves stripping the vehicle near the Seven Ponds in the Botanic Gardens at approximately 1 pm last Tuesday. By that time the car’s number plate, HB 4062, had already been replaced with a brand new number plate, PJJ 2821.
Two of the car thieves escaped on foot through the back gate of the Botanical Gardens and an alleged accomplice, who attempted to drive out the front gate, was trapped because the gate had already been blocked.
