Dear Editor,
First of all I would like to say thank you to the photographer for an excellent shot of my bags which were displayed in your report in The Scene of August 30 (pages 1C and 7C). Thanks also to your reporter Iana Seales for the story. Please note that my name is spelt with an ‘i’ and none of my bags were made of, or had any plastic material incorporated in them. It was an honour for me to be a part of the hair and accessories show.
I must say that here in Linden we have people with lots of talent and skills that normally go unnoticed, unmentioned and unidentified. It would be really nice if more emphasis were placed on the visual arts, designing and craft in Linden.
The Visual Arts and Literacy display which was held at the National Library in Linden was poorly advertised, despite the efforts of Wanda Richmond. Most of the individuals who had stuff to display were very disappointed, including myself. There were people there such as Isha Shaw, the poet; Stacy and Desney Weeks, who design clothes, leather slippers and jewellery and also make shea butter cream and oils, among other things; Brenda Whyte who does floral arrangements; her sons and daughter-in-law who do pottery, tie-dying and designing using raw materials; and other individuals whose names I can’t remember at this time, who produce work such as knitting, sculpture, dolls, chair cushions, stuffed animals, straw hats, bags, baskets, etc.
There were also paintings done by someone who recently graduated from the Burrowes’ School of Art; ceramics; Monica’s fabric designs, towels and pillow cases; and Loretta’s clothing designs.
More could have been done to make the Linden community aware of the Visual Arts and Literacy display. For more information I can be reached on telephone numbers 663-3357, 444-4328 or 679-9733.
