A popular West Ruimveldt businessman was stabbed to death last night on his motorcycle in a dark alley in the area following an altercation with another man.
Desmond Davis known as ‘Lion’ was reportedly slumped on the bicycle for some time and persons passed him by in the dark alley unaware; eventually someone decided to take a closer look and made the discovery.
Reports are that Davis was left to lie flat in the alley for a while as efforts were being made to contact his family. No immediate attempts were made to rush him to the hospital and before any of his relatives arrived on the scene someone covered him up with an old sheet.
“Nobody ain’t see nothing and people ain’t talking to we to say if they see anything but still somebody manage to cover he with a sheet,” a relative said last night struggling to compose herself.
Davis was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital last night. He suffered deep stab wounds to the region of his heart.
Stabroek News was told that some time after 7 pm, an argument erupted between Davis and another man. No one could say what the men were arguing about but Davis reportedly went home, armed himself with a cutlass and went back to the scene.
Persons who claimed to have witnessed the incident said Davis found the man and started advancing with the weapon. According to the eyewitnesses, what happened next was hard to determine because a power outage hit the area and within a few minutes, no one really knew what had transpired.
One of the eyewitnesses said that the man who Davis approached might have been assisted by a friend and the two overpowered him. The eyewitness said that Davis’s cutlass was used to inflict the injuries he suffered.
Details of what transpired after Davis was stabbed are sketchy as various persons offered disjointed accounts, but what was clear was that no one ventured into the alley for a short while after Davis was stabbed.
Some persons were adamant that the persons who stabbed Davis were laying in wait and that they used the power outage to strike. However, they were unable to say whether Davis had been involved in an argument prior to him being stabbed.
Davis’s family declined to say anything last night as grief and shock gripped his household. His reputed wife, Telita Smith was unable to hold back her emotions. But when asked whether he had any problems with anyone a relative said, “Not today”.
Davis grew up in West Ruimveldt and resided at Lot 251 for many years. He started up a few small businesses in the area but had trouble keeping them afloat, more recently he had opened an internet café but that too, eventually closed.
Scores of residents in the area assembled at his home last night expressing shock and asking countless questions about what happened. One man commented that he did not expect, “the lion to go down like that”.
Police are investigating the fatal stabbing.
