Fast bowler Kawal Mangal grabbed 7-35 as newcomers Canefield Cricket Club of East Canje defeated Young and Restless of Reliance, Canje by nine wickets in the first round of the fifth annual Berbice Cricket Board of Control (BCBC)/ New Building Society (NBS) sponsored second division limited overs competition recently.
Another fast bowler Safraz Ali was also in the limelight taking 6-17 to guide Golden Fleece Invaders to a 168-run victory over Victorious Eleven while Clifford Fraser took 6-33 to lead Flying Star of Kortheberaadt, East Bank Berbice to a one-wicket victory over Sisters.
And off spinner Stephen Ramlochan who snared 5-4 ensured Kendal Union inflict a 10-wicket defeat on Number One Road.
Full results of matches show Canefield defeating Young and Restless by nine wickets at Goed Bananen Land. Young and Restless won the toss, took first strike and were scuttled out for 60 from 16 overs with Mangal bagging 7-35.
Canefield replied with 61-1 from 8.2 overs.
At Paradise, Golden Fleece Invaders inflicted a 168-run defeat on Victorious Eleven thanks to the all-round efforts of Safraz Alli.
When Golden Fleece batted, Eric Fordyce (36), Dwayne Casey (35) and Ali’s (33), guided them to 221 from 23.2 overs.
Leroy Noble and Moolchand Ramlall took 3-38 and 2-50 respectively.
Victorious Eleven then found the bowling of Ali, who opened the bowling, too much to handle and folded for a paltry 53 from 12 overs with Ali taking 6-17.
Hardat Arjune’s 42 helped Sisters to 149 from 19.5 overs with Clifford Fraser taking 6-33 and Kenton Grumble 2-32.
Flying Stars replied with 152-9 from 22.3 overs thanks to Sudesh Brijlall who made 31. Arjune returned with the ball to take 2-17 for Sisters.
At Kendall’s Union, the home team defeated Number One Road by 10 wickets. Number One Road batted first and were bowled out for 38 from 14.2 overs.
Off spinner Stephen Ramlochan captured 5-4, while S. Baker (3-11) and R. Sewdat (2-15) offered support.
Kendall’s Union reached their target from 4.2 overs, ending on 40 without loss.
Jerry Heyliger’s all-round performance steered Police to 58-run victory over West Canje at Lochaber.
When Police batted, they owed their final total of 166 from 25 overs to the efforts of Heyliger, who scored 53 decorated with four fours and three sixes.
Raymond Mohammed picked up 2-13 and Derrick Kissoon 2-24 for West Canje.
In reply, West Canje found Heyliger, who took 4-9 from four overs of medium pace, Lawrence Bahadur (2-12) and Jason Leitch (2-14) too much to handle and were bowled out for 108 from 21 overs.
At D’Edward, the two home teams namely D’ Edward ‘A’ and D’ Edward ‘B’ faced each other with the ‘A’ team showing their superiority when they came away with a 76-run victory.
D’ Edward ‘A’ took first strike and scored 203-7 from their 40 overs with Meadeo Persaud 55not out, Tona Ramnanan, 52 and Derrick Lalsa, 34 not out being the principal scorers.
Travis Moore took 2-39 bowling for the `B’ team who were then restricted to 127 from 36 overs.
Lalsa returned with the ball to take 3-18 and along with Romine Boodram (3-30) and Marcus France with 2-11 ensured the victory.
Overwinning Bible Church went under to Edinburgh by four wickets in their encounter which was played at Edinburgh.
Overwinning Bible Church batted first and were bowled out for 175 from 31.4 overs with Shazam Azeez leading the way with 52. He received support from Shawn Baksh (43) and Geeraish Deeges (27) against the bowling of Ralph Chakalal who took 4-21 and Raidall (3-16).
In their turn at the wicket, Edinburgh scored 176-6 from 34.5 overs thanks to the combined efforts of Yudrunauth Seepersaud (50), Denny David (33) and Shafiq Khan (27).
Carl Peters took 2-25 for Overwinning Bible Church.
At Number Two, West Coast Berbice, the home team went under to Woodley Park Young Strikers by three wickets.
Asked to take first strike, Number Two scored 116 from 39 overs with Filent Bacchus who made 30 being the principal scorer.
Rajendra Deonarine took 4-23 and Jamil Hamid 3-34 for Woodley Park who made 167-7 from 36 overs in reply, thanks to Ganesh Gossai’s 51 and Mahendra Persaud’s 39.
Gibraltar/Courtland combined defeated Fyrish Road by two wickets.
Fyrish Road took first strike and were bowled out for 142 from 34 overs with Vickey Veerasammy contributing 52.
Shameem Ahmad supported with 34 while Travis Williams (3-11), Elroy Henry (2-25) and Daren Giddings who took 2-26 were the wicket takers.
Gibraltar/Courtland replied with 146-8 from 34.1 overs with Seon Crandon’s 58 the top score.
Michael Cummings supported with 28 as Ahmad returned to scalp 4-33 while Hassan Hussain supported with 2-21.
At Scottsburg, home team Scottsburg United beat Kim IL Sung by eight wickets after bowling them out for 85 from 27 overs.
Berbice under-19 all-rounder Alex Amsterdam took 3-20, Nirmal Yacoob (3-27) and Akeem Bowlin (2-27).
In reply, Scottsburg United reached 87-2 from 8.4 overs, with Amsterdam making an unbeaten 44.
Amzaan Amalsammy took 2-34 from Kim IL Sung.
At Number 45, Number 47 Pioneer defeated the home team by one run in a thriller while Johanna Warriors defeated Mibicuri Strikers by 35 runs and Letter Kenny Young Stars overcame Whim National by three wickets.
Action in the competition will continue this weekend.
