The Guyana Nurses Association (GNA) is calling on the authorities to review the security arrangements currently in place for nurses across the country in the wake of the attack on two of them at Wismar hospital.
In a press statement condemning the attack the body called on nurses to highlight and document their concerns with regards to safety, “so that we could work with all stakeholders to ensure immediate redress for these issues”.
The GNA pointed to what it described as the scandalous working conditions which nurses have been subjected to over time, adding that the relevant authorities have a responsibility to establish and maintain a safe, healthy and secure environment for employees.
The GNA said it stands ready to provide assistance and support to all measures that will bring a speedy resolution to the matters affecting nurses in Region 10, noting that there is need for an immediate regime of rehabilitative care and support for the two nurses who were attacked.
Further, the body said that the police and the justice system need to ensure that the perpetrators of the attack face the full face of the law to deter others in the society from committing such acts.
“Even a few short years ago it would have been unthinkable for even the hardened criminal to contemplate such a despicable act to our nurses, our dedicated care givers in active duty”, the release added.
