– Fitzgerald teams up with Semple to take ‘Blind Draw’ doubles
Norman Madhoo warmed up for the upcoming Guyana Open and Bryden’s sponsored South American and Caribbean Championships by winning the Clive Harrison-sponsored Open Singles title last Friday at the Salt Air Sports Club, Le Meridien Pegasus.
Madhoo took on some of the top players in local darts, including Raphael De Souza, Bryan James and Sudesh Fitzgerald and played unbeaten in the four-round knockout event.
Madhoo’s victory earned him $5,000 and Fitzgerald $3,000 in the competition that was sponsored to the tune of $30,000.
Harrison, who sponsored the tournament, was a former top ranked, local darts player.
He did not take part in the competition which attracted some 16 players.
Some of the players who took part in the competition included Terry Joseph, Anthony Bissoondyal, Vibert Yearwood, Hubert Joseph, Sherwyn Green, Paul Correia and Bryan Romain but they all lost in the first round.
Raphael DeSouza, Mark Semple, Vishnu Bhuran and Lawrence Correia lost in the round of eight while Bryan James and Francis Correia lost in the semi-finals to Madhoo and Fitzgerald respectively.
Meanwhile, in the blind draw that took place the same night, Sudesh Fitzgerald and Mark Semple took the title from Vishnu Bhuran and top local female darts player Jean Singh.
The blind draw saw eight pairs participating.
The upset of the draw was the defeat of Madhoo and Hubert Joseph at the hands of Vishnu Bhuran and Jean Singh in the second round.
Madhoo and Fitzgerald were the only two players to score the maximum of 180 points with three darts.
And in the blind draw, held at Granny’s Sports Bar in Better Hope, Fitzgerald and Azeez Majid turned back the challenge of Madhoo and Bissoondyal.
The tournament saw four pairs taking part in Krishna Bissoondyal and Vijay Roopchand, Bryan James and Shameer Latiff, Fitzgerald and Afeez Majid and Madhoo and Anthony Bisoondyal.
The tournament was played on a round robin system where each team played the other and at the end the grand total decided the winners.
The team of Bryan and Shameer failed to win a match, ending in the cellar without a point.
Walking away with the third prize were Krishna Bissoondyal and Roopchand who scored their only win over the last placed team ending on two points.
Madhoo and Anthony Bissoondyal, who lost to the eventual winners, ended on four points.
Fitzgerald and Majid played unbeaten scoring a maximum six points.
Another blind draw competition is slated for this weekend at the Salt Air Club and this one is being sponsored by the Guyana Darts Association (GDA). ‘Bulls Eye’ time is 19:00 hours.
