Transport and Harbours Department vessel, MV Kimbia, is now docked at Vieira Investments Limited dockyard at Houston, East Bank Demerara, for major rehabilitation and maintenance work, the Government Information Agency (GINA) reported.
The ship has been used for years to transport goods to Regions One and Two, especially to the North West District and the Pomeroon, but another vessel, smaller in size, is being used in the interim.
According to GINA, T&HD Maintenance Engineer Edward Baker said work is at present ongoing on the deck and will be followed by a thorough examination of the ship’s hull after it enters the floating dock. It is estimated that the repairs will be completed within one month but they have already covered eight days so in another three weeks the job should be completed, Baker said.
Minister of Transport and Hydraulics Robeson Benn on Wednesday visited the vessel in dock.
The MV Kimbia was acquired by the Guyana government in the early 1950s to boost the services of the T&HD, GINA added.
