Dear Editor,
I have a daughter who attended Bishops’ High School and wrote 10 subjects at CXC in 2006. She got a distinction in Maths, six Grade 2s, and two Grade 3s. In 2007 my daughter decided to find a decent job to earn a decent salary to further her career but to date no jobs is available. Abundant applications were sent out to the various banks and organizations.
We have come to a realization that sending out applications is not the problem; it is who knows you and not who you know any more. When there’s an advertisement for a vacancy, that position is already filled by someone who knows of someone. It is just a formality to publish it in the newspaper. Most vacancies are asking for qualifications along with experience. How can a youth gain working experience when he/she just came out of school and is now looking to have the opportunity to work hard and would like to make a future for him/herself?
How do working people gain work experience? Don’t forget they started by having the opportunity to get the job and then trained for the position. Some personnel managers in organizations need to view the applications properly and give the unknown person with the qualifications a chance to work and earn an honest living.
Yours faithfully,
