Four persons including a newborn are now homeless after a fire, suspected to be electrical in origin, completely destroyed their one-flat two-bedroom house at Number Two Village, West Berbice around 5 pm yesterday.
Neighbours saw smoke coming from one of the bedrooms and alerted the owner, 49-year-old Ramnarine `Shortboy’ Ambeeka. By the time he ran in to investigate, the building was already engulfed in flames. He was unable to save anything in the house.
The man’s daughter, Indira Ambeeka who lives behind where the fire occurred said that her father immediately ran out and barely managed to save a bus and a car that were parked in the yard.
She said the fire had already started to spread to her house and she was very grateful to the neighbours who assisted in averting further disaster.
The neighbours had formed a bucket brigade and tried to save Ambeeka’s house but they were no match for the blaze.
They also had to drench another house at the side which was badly scorched.
Indira said her father recently returned from overseas and invested in the car and was planning to start a business soon.
Her brother Rajendra also shared the home with his wife and baby. At the time of the fire his wife was away at her mother’s house at Canje with the baby.
