– court hears
A trio who allegedly assaulted each other was granted bail Thursday when they appeared before Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Thirty-five-year-old Debra Archer of Lot 57 Public Road, Kitty, pleaded not guilty to assaulting her cousin Andrew Cumberbatch, while Cumberbatch, 41, of the same residence, pleaded not guilty to unlawfully assaulting her and also denied unlawfully wounding Leroy Lewis. Lewis, 48, pleaded not guilty to unlawfully assaulting and causing bodily harm to Cumberbatch.
It is alleged that on September 21 at the trio’s Kitty home they assaulted each other.
Archer stated that on the day in question she got into an argument with Cumberbatch which resulted in him kicking her in the abdomen. However Cumberbatch stated that he retaliated that way after she had dealt him several blows to his head with a piece of wood. Cumberbatch went on to say that while wrestling with Archer, Lewis grabbed and started beating and biting him but according to Lewis it was Cumberbatch who bit him on the chest.
However, Cumberbatch’s Lawyer stated that Lewis’s attack on his client has been an ongoing occurrence and at present Lewis also has a case pending before the court for threatening Cumberbatch. The defence attorney then applied for bail.
Magistrate Robertson-Ogle subsequently placed Cumberbatch on $32,000 bail while Lewis was placed on $25,000. Archer was also granted bail of $7,000. The trio was then ordered to return to court on November 5.
