Dear Editor,
The reluctance of the Ministry of Education to provide for the safety of the employees and students is just baffling. One would think that the ministry would want to do everything in its power to alleviate concerns about safety, while creating a conducive environment for the sharing of knowledge. The Minister’s refusal to have the classroom floors lacquered reflects a disrespect for those who are expected to spend hundreds of hours working and studying at the university.
It flies in the face of the government’s desire (as expressed many times by President Jagdeo) of creating a knowledge-based society.
I fail to understand how the Minister cannot see the impact his decision is likely to have on the wider education system, public sector and country as a whole.
Should the parents of children in the final stage of secondary education begin to worry about the asbestos situation at the university, how would that influence their decision to send children to UG?
