The Lethem and Linden development plans were given the green light by Cabinet at its meeting on September 16, according to Head of the Presidential Secretariat Dr Roger Luncheon.
During his weekly post-Cabinet press conference on Thursday at the Office of the President, the Cabinet Secretary disclosed that after a lengthy discussion on the presentations made by members of the Guyana Lands and Survey Commission and the Central Housing and Planning Authority the plans were endorsed, a Government Information Agency (GINA) release said.
The Lethem development plan focuses on the physical, social and economic features of the area and projects a future with residential, agricultural, agro-industrial, recreation and energy sector prospects.
Meanwhile, the Linden Road Development Plan is almost similar to the Lethem development plan, GINA stated.
It said the Lethem plan holds out much potential for the development of Region Nine because it designates industrial zones, commercial zones, housing zones and the new highway that would pass through Lethem and all other zonings in Lethem. Luncheon noted that it would create a boost in the agricultural sector.
Moreover, GINA noted, establishment of a paved highway from Linden to Lethem remains a primary objective of the government, and while this development is being pursued, investments are continuing to maintain and upgrade the current roadway.
The aim is to provide an entire route that will allow easier and continuous transportation access since the roadway is likely to serve as the main artery from Boa Vista and Manaus through Lethem and Linden to Georgetown.
