Cycling enthusiasts in the National Park yesterday were beside themselves with joy when Walter Grant Stuart outsprinted a strong field boasting a few seasoned campaigners to capture the schoolboys and novices 35-lap event from Ossie Edwards in a driving finish in the National Sports Commission sponsored 11-race card.
Grant Stuart, who had his right hand amputated following an accident sometime back, took the event in a time of 1:29:12s edging out Edwards for the top spot.
Third place went to Tyrone Conway with Phillp Piggott, Neil Reece and Virgil Jones taking the next three places.
Reece took the juveniles event from Jason Pollydore and Jonathan Fagundes while Stephen Roberts won the upright category from Leon Haymer and Shawn Frank.
Malcolm Gilkes won the veterans’ Over-50 category from Courtney Thomas and Aubrey Gravesande respectively while Jones was the winner of the Under-50 veterans’ category with Linden Blackman second and Kennard Lovell third.
Marcia Dick won the girls’ 12-14 yearscategory from Naomi Singh and Beverley Mc Lean.
The BMX Open category was won by Ozia McAulay from Kunta Mackenzie and Kevin Edwards while Orlando King was the winner of the BMX boys’ 12-14 years category with Andrew Monique second and Akjeem Lakon third.
Crystal Blackman won the BMX girls’ 9-12 years category from Ashley Anthony and Sabina Juman while the BMX boys ‘9-12 years category was won by Orlando King from Tariq Baksh and Teon Joseph.
Ramond Perez was the winner of the BMX boys’ 6-9 years category from Dineshwar Raghubeer and Rawle Mc Lean.
The event featured cyclists who participated in the annual Teach Them Young cycling programme and was also held in observance of Amerindian Heritage Month.
