An accident involving a truck and a car at Kingelly, West Coast Berbice around 6 pm on Sunday, has left a 45-year-old father of one dead and three other persons seriously injured.
Alvin Fitzroy Goodman of 30 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam was rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital along with the other persons. He died while receiving treatment.
Driver of the car, HB 5587, Bevon Raman, 27, of East Ruimveldt, Georgetown and passengers Danesh Ramsarran, 30, and 45-year-old Gangadai Chu of Bush Lot Village, West Coast Berbice have been transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
According to a police press release, the car was “proceeding east along the roadway when it is alleged that the driver of the truck, GEE 3002 reversed out onto the path of the car, resulting in the collision.”
The driver of the truck, Robert Marques was taken into custody to assist with investigations.
Reports are that the car, a taxi with the Indian Chief logo, was speeding and by the time the driver saw the truck in his path it was too late.
An eyewitness recounted that he was walking along the road when he heard a loud noise. Upon checking realized that the car had slammed into the truck.
The man said too that the car, which was heading to Rosignol knocked the fuel tank and an iron bar off the truck. The car’s battery also burst into flames.
He said persons started to run from “all directions” after hearing the impact. Some of the residents assisted in rescuing the driver and passengers by pulling the doors open with a tractor.
Relatives who described Goodman as a jovial and kind person said he was returning home from the airport. He is survived by his son Alvin Jr. and his eight siblings.
