“Your worship I try fuh help she out so I slip out de thing fuh get lil money,” a man who stole almost $70,000 in bras and panties said when he appeared before the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
Lyndon Grandville, 44, of 169 Charlotte Street pleaded guilty to the charge of simple larceny when it was read to him by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson.
The defendant admitted to the court that between September 20 and 22 he stole 5 dozen bras, 10 dozen panties and a number of hairbrushes together worth $74,000, property of Dora Tapin.
According to the prosecution, the virtual complainant (VC) employed Granville as a porter and he took the articles mentioned in the charge to Charlotte Street. It was during one such journey that the man stole the panties and bras. The VC, the prosecution said, decided to count her stock and discovered the articles missing.
Granville told the court that he was trying to assist the VC. He said that he slipped the things out of the set he was carrying and gave them to someone who promised to give him the money later.
The defendant stated that he would have given the money to the VC because he was only trying to help her sell.
After listening to his story the magistrate said, “This offence carries three years. How much do you want?”
“I can’t tell you how to do you work,” Granville replied hesitantly before finally giving his answer. “…a year gon work you know, Your Worship.”
The man was granted his request and he will spend 12 months in jail.
