This year’s Caribbean Youth Day observance was marked by the achievements of young Caribbean citizens.
In a message to mark the day, Henry Charles, Regional Director of the Commonwealth Youth Programme Caribbean Centre (CYPCC), urged the promotion and rewarding of young unsung heroes in educational institutions, sporting fraternities, the artistic community, business enterprises and governance systems.
According to Charles, if such efforts are rewarded and promoted, then they would help in painting the portrait of a great story yet untold.
In a CYPCC press release, Charles noted that the portrait often painted was of a crisis among young Caribbean citizens, whether the issue was crime and violence, HIV and AIDS, substance abuse or drug trafficking. However, he said, in spite of this, the majority of young Caribbean citizens had made and continued to make a significant contribution in the development of their communities, country and region.
‘Caribbean Youth: Building a legacy of peace and sustainable development’ was the theme of this year’s youth day celebrations.
