The ‘Kaieteur Domestic Special’ now at a cost of $30,000 was re-launched on Wednesday through the collaboration of the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Air Services Limited, Kaieteur National Park, Rainforest Tours and the Guyana Tourism Authority. The first flight is scheduled for tomorrow and will continue every Saturday until December 27, the Government Information Agency (GINA) said in a release.
And the agency quoted Minister Manniram Prashad as saying that, “The re-launching of the Kaieteur Special is very important because within the last few months there has been this clamour for affordable domestic tourism.” He stated this is a private sector sponsored activity and it is not being subsidized by government.
There have been two previous ‘Kaieteur Domestic Special’ packages that were launched during the year, the first one from July to August for resident Guyanese and the second for CARIFESTA X visitors from August 22 to 31.
Director of the GTA, Indranauth Haralsingh said that these special packages proved to be tremendously successful as the visitors’ arrival at Kaieteur Park during August was recorded as an all-time high of approximately 750 persons.
The minister also called on the other tour operators to take up the initiative as the ministry would support them in the same way such as removing the landing fee at the Kaieteur National Park.
Meanwhile, Prashad disclosed that discussions are currently ongoing with investors to build an eco-lodge at Kaieteur National Park. He noted that the present facilities there need to be upgraded and the ministry is “in the process of getting that fixed right now.”
