Octogenarian Noelina Prospere-Medor who had been reported missing was found yesterday at a house at Craig, East Bank Demerara.
Police broke into the house, which was padlocked, and removed the frail-looking elderly woman some time after 5 pm. She was alone at the time, but there were reported signs of others residing at the residence.
The woman identified herself to police when questioned and spoke of her son, Sylvester Medor, who had been in Guyana searching for her but left without any information as to where she was.
Prospere-Medor was transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital for medical evaluation and admission. Sources at the hospital said the woman appeared to be dehydrated, in addition to her frail condition.
Stabroek News saw the elderly woman at the hospital last night as she waited to see a doctor. She was on a stretcher but according to reports, she can use her legs. She spoke with persons gathered around.
“Is de old woman from de papers,” a woman said, and Prospere-Medor responded, “I am Noelina”.
While in the ER, Prospere-Medor received a telephone call from her son, who had approached the media last month, with the story of his missing mother. He had searched for her prior to going public with the story and only returned to the UK a few days ago. Prospere-Medor broke into tears after a cellular phone was handed to her and she heard her son’s voice.
Prospere-Medor is a St. Lucian who settled in Guyana many years ago. A couple who was in contact with her son had been entrusted with her care, but after they separated it was reported that the husband kept Prospere-Medor.
The police were investigating the woman’s disappearance and are still involved in the case. This newspaper was informed that the woman is likely to remain at the public hospital until a relative turns up or proper authorization is given for her to be removed.
