There will be a new junior Chess champion of Guyana when the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) stages it national senior and junior championships following the completion of a qualification tournament which begins on Sunday to arrive at the eight competitors in each category.
According to a release from the GCF, last year’s junior champion Ronald Roberts is over the stipulated age limit and would not be able to defend his title.
Not so for the national senior champion Berbician Kriskal Persaud, however and though he will not be involved in Sunday’s qualification tournament, he will certainly be pushing pawns and pieces when the seven qualifiers are identified.
The qualification tournament will take place at the St. Stanislaus College on Brickdam and will be an eight-round Swiss system affair with a duration of two hours per game.
In the senior category, the top seven finishers will join reigning national champion Persaud in a double round robin tournament sometime next month for the right to be called national champion.
In the junior category, eight players will go forward.
Registration begins at 9am on Sunday with the first set of games scheduled to start at 10am.
Some three rounds will be played with a further two rounds to be contested on October 18 from 2pm.
The final three rounds will be played on October 19 from 10am.
All chess players are invited to participate. Players are advised that scoring is mandatory.
The tournament is sponsored by Kei-Shar’s Gift Shoppe and Sasha Cells. For more information please contact Irshad Mohamed on 664-1650.
