Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson ordered a man who admitted to leaving Guyana via an unauthorized port to pay a $20,000 fine or serve a 12-month sentence when he appeared at court.
Danniram Alli, 42, a dealer in footwear of Lot 7 Taymouth Manor, Essequibo, pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to him at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Alli admitted that on August 7 he departed Guyana by sea from a port not authorized for such departure. He told the court that he left Guyana via the illegal port, entered Venezuela and then journeyed from Venezuela to the Mexico/Texas border where he was caught. The man said he had been denied a United States visa when he applied to the embassy in 2006 and in January. “My family is over there in the US and I wanted to be with them,” he said in his defence.
