The cause of death of Courts Pacesetters basketball player Kevin Worrell remained a mystery yesterday after yesterday’s post-mortem results were returned as inconclusive.
Worrell 21, of 63 First Street Agricola was playing for his club against Maccabees Basketball Club in a one-day knock-out competition organized by the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association on the Burnham Basketball court last Sunday when he collapsed.
He was subsequently pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
Yesterday’s results were eagerly being awaited by many since the player had not been known to be suffering from any illness.
Worrell’s mother Rhonda Johnson told Stabroek Sport last evening that she was still trying to figure out what went wrong.
Johnson added that she was trying to remain calm but yet was still highly emotional. She revealed that she was overwhelmed with the support given to the family from the basketball fraternity and furniture giants Courts who have pledged to help off set funeral expenses.
Meanwhile, it was disclosed that the funeral will take place on Saturday. Worrell’s body will be at the Merriman Funeral Parlour for viewing from 11am to noon before moving to the Burnham Basketball Court where it will remain until 1:30 pm.
The body will then move to the West Ruimveldt Wesleyan Church for the funeral service at 2:00 pm.
The candle light vigil will continue at the Burnham Court but tonight and tomorrow night, the wake will be held at the Guyana National Industrial Corporation (GNIC) Sports Complex on Woolford Avenue.
