An East Bank Demerara (EBD) couple was on Thursday night terrorized by two men who came calling at their business for an aerated drink but instead confronted them with a gun and cutlass before fleeing with cash.
Errol Ming, 56, of Golden Grove, EBD who was gun butted during the attack was treated at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre and later sent away.
According to a police release Ming was sitting on his veranda around 7:15 pm when the two men approached on the pretext of purchasing an aerated drink. The man left to get it and upon his return he was held at gunpoint by the men who demanded cash.
The release added that Ming’s wife who was inside the house handed over $250,000 cash to the bandits who escaped after hitting Ming in the head with a handgun.
When Stabroek News spoke with the businessman yesterday he denied that the sum stated to the police was handed over to the bandits. According to him the men got away with $31, 000.
Recounting what transpired that night, Ming said that he operates a small business at his home. Two men came and requested a one litre “Coke”. The man told this newspaper that he went into the refrigerator for the beverage and when he turned around he saw the men armed with a gun and a cutlass respectively.
According to him, one of the men gun-butted him during a scuffle while the other placed the cutlass to his wife’s neck and demanded money.
He said that he is still feeling the effects of the gun butt.
This was the first robbery the businessman has ever experienced.
Police investigations are continuing.
