The court clerk who was arrested in connection with the missing case jackets in the Edwin Niles matter is back on the job at the Magistrate’s Court.
A police source told Stabroek News on Wednesday that the man was released as there was no evidence to hold him. However, this newspaper understands that investigations are continuing.
The clerk was arrested on September 26 after the case jackets for two senior prison officers charged with the death of Niles, who was an inmate at the prison, disappeared. Kurt Corbin, 30, of N 27 George Avenue, Lamaha Springs and Gladwin Samuels, 26, formerly of 89 Oronoque Street, Bourda were charged with killing Niles. According to reports a bailer for the men went to the court and requested to see the jackets and they disappeared soon after.
Thirty-four-year-old Niles died at the Georgetown hospital nine days after he was admitted.
A post-mortem report revealed that the man died as a result of a blood clot in the lungs due to burns about the back and a fractured left arm.
Meanwhile, it is not clear whether the jackets have been found.
