In relation to yesterday’s SN item ‘Noelina moved to the Palms’ I want to assure Mr. Sylvester Medor not to worry. Your mother would be properly taken care of at the Palms. The nurses there are very helpful and they would make sure she eats the right food and so on. Some people contact the nurses directly and make sure some extra care is given to their loved ones. You can also get someone from outside of the Palms to go in on a regular basis to check on her.
I say this from experience because my dad was a resident of the Palms after some family members were in a struggle for possession of his property.
I would like to call on Guyanese abroad to assist certain institutions in Guyana such as the Palms. Yes, you would be surprised to learn how well these institutions are functioning, and the high quality of care the patients there are given. A lot of other Guyanese can take advantage of institutions like the Palms.
However, there is a minor problem. Some patients who are not very sick should be placed in separate areas because they are known to bully the weaker ones, taking their clothes and goodies away, especially if you do not have someone to check up on your loved ones frequently.
In all fairness we must also recognize the effort of the PPP in making the Palms a functioning institution. I remember about 15 years ago what a sad state the buildings in the compound were in, together with broken beds and furniture. A lot was done while Ms Bibi Shadick was Minister of Human Services.
