– GFC tips Pele off the edge
Alpha United and George-town Football Club (GFC) recorded welcome victories this past Sunday in the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) organized Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GT&T) Cellink Plus Premier League at Tucville Playfield.
Alpha United easily disposed of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) 3 – 0 in the feature match of the double header that also had Pele bowing out to GFC 0 – 1.
In the feature match Anthony Abrams was once again the main contributor for Alpha as he continued his good form throughout the latter stages of the competition.
Abrams recorded a rich double to lead Alpha United past the GDF. Alpha United and the GDF are now fixed at the top of the leader board with 27 points each.
An 11th minute run away by the vigorous Abrams was the commencement of GDF’s 90 minutes of misery. He received a terrific pass from his team mate Andrew Murray Jr. on the right flank where he alone was left to challenge the GDF custodian Keith Fraser.
There was only one second half goal in the Alpha/GDF encounter and it belonged to none other than Abrams. He defeated Fraser 10 minutes before the regulation time whistle.
Alpha’s composed forward Elton Browne was the other scorer after he received a gift in the 29th minute from the GDF custodian.
Browne was blown for a yellow card 30 seconds before he scored when he attempted an odious tackle trying to win the ball just outside the 18-yard box on the left flank.
From that spot the free kick was taken by Fraser who left the goal unguarded, he mistimed the kick in an attempt to clear it out of their half and it landed at the foot of Browne who then buried the ball in the goal from about 15 yards outside the 18-yard box.
This victory now intensifies the competition as the final days of the conclusion of the tourney draws near with the three top teams GDF, Alpha and Sunburst Camptown fighting for championship honours.
GDF and Alpha are at the top of the table with only a one point lead on Sunburst Camptown with each team having two more games to contest.
In the curtain raiser of the evening GFC scored one goal and defending it became their primary task rather than extending their lead.
A 32nd minute goal by Peter Parks was the decider for this match where GFC often had Pele at their mercy with numerous chances inside and around the 18-yard box which could not be finished.
GFC are fourth in the points standing with 17 points ahead of Fruta Conquerors with 16 points, Pele (13), Santos (6) and Uprising (4). These five teams all have one game each left to contest to officially conclude their games.
The Cellink Plus Premier League action continues on Saturday October 18 at the Tucville Playfield with a triple header. GFC versus Uprising at 4pm, Pele vs. GDF at 6pm and Sunburst Camptown vs. Alpha United in the feature match at 8pm are the games billed to be contested.
