-boxer records one of the fastest knockouts at the Commonwealth Youth Games
All it took was 46 seconds!
That was the time Guyana’s Clevon Rock took to dismantle Kenya’s Kingstone Otieno in their bantamweight clash as the Third Annual Junior Commonwealth Games in Pune, India entered its second day.
Rock was the only Caribbean boxer to win yesterday and Guyana’s medal hopes in the sport now lie squarely on the shoulders of Rock and Herlando Allicock who won his light flyweight bout against Denis Andre of Mauritius on the first day.
Allicock scored a lopsided win over Andre winning the four round bout by a 19:10 score.
The first round was even on the five judges’ scorecard which ended 3:3. The second round saw Allicock taking a one point lead (4:3).
In the third round the Guyanese began to find his mark at will and took the round 7:3 and Allicock kept his best for last pummelling the hapless Andre for a 5:1 round.
Rock, who fought yesterday morning ambushed Otieno from the opening bell and within seconds Welsh referee John Waith had to stop the punishment.
Rock was also leading on the judges scorecards by 4:1.
Rock will now head towards the quarterfinals where he will be looking to keep the Guyana flag flying.
In the second fight featherweight Stefan Gouveia walked into an English wall by the name of Iain Weaver who forced the referee to call a halt to the bout in 1:22 seconds of the first round.
Weaver also was ahead on the judges’ scorecard having chalked up an 11:1 points difference with not even half of the round finished.
Guyana’s Akeem Alexander trailed India’s Shanthosh Virothu 0:16 when the referee stopped the light welterweight contest in 1:47s of the third round.
Virothu had won the first round 8:0 and the second 4:0 and was leading in the third round 4:0 when the fight was stopped.
