Lots of excitement is expected today when athletes from 11 units of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) compete for honours at the final of the 2008 GDF Inter-Unit Track and Field Championships at the GDF Sports Club ground at Base camp Ayanganna, Thomas Lands.
Yesterday, the athletes took part in the Standard Points (SP) events which marked the beginning of the championships.
The SP events are designed to provide an opportunity for every soldier to participate. Each athlete who completes a particular event within the relevant qualifying time and distance earns one point for his or her unit.
Today’s event will see competition in the 100, 200, 400, 800, and 1500-metre races along with 4×100 and 200 metres relays for men and women.
There will also be Tug-O-War races along with races for senior officers as well as for the army’s civilian workers.
According to a release from the GDF, they have a proud tradition of having contributed to the national pool of athletes who have done Guyana proud in several sport disciplines including cricket, football, boxing and athletics.
From now on, the Inter-Unit championship will be a regular feature on the GDF’s calendar, the release added.
The army is also asking patrons desirous of attending the championships to via the Carifesta Avenue entrance.
