Former head coach of the Canadian National Sevens Men’s Rugby Team and International Rugby Board (IRB) Staff Coach Spencer Robinson arrives in Guyana today to join the coaching staff of Guyana’s National Men’s and Women’s Rugby team in preparation for the forthcoming NAWIRA 2009 Regional Rugby World Cup (RWC) Sevens Qualifier in the Bahamas on October 25 and 26.
Robinson will accompany the Guyana national teams to tournament, serving as Technical Director alongside Sherlock Solomon and Alton Agard who are the head coaches of the men and women’s team respectively.
Robinson served as Assistant Coach to Canada’s Men’s Sevens team from September 2002 – August 2005 and took over the Head Coach position for the 2005-2006 Commonwealth Games in August of 2005. In addition, he served as the Head Coach for Canada’s Women’s U-23 team from September 2000 – 2003.
The Canadian-born rugby coach lived in Guyana with his Guyanese parents and grandfather Randolph Moore and returned to Canada at the age of six. This is his second visit to Guyana, following his first visit in 2005 Robinson came to Guyana as an IRB Staff Coach and served as a Technical Director of Guyana’s National Sevens team.
He also had a career as a distinguished rugby player as well as a coach in Canada and said he looks forward immensely to the opportunity to once again work with the Guyanese team in their efforts to qualify for the 2009 Rugby World Cup Sevens in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) next year.
His first practice session is scheduled to commence at 4:00pm today in the National Park on the rugby playfield.
