Designer Derek Moore is offering up a double dose of Guyana Fashion Weekend (GFW) with his panache and using the models he feels should have been on the catwalk.
He rates his experience at the recently concluded GFW as “incredible”, but said that a few things could have been done differently. Moore emphasizes that he is in no way re-loading the fashion weekend, adding that his interpretation is more of the runway styles through his lenses.
In an interview with The Scene earlier this week, the designer who is home on a brief holiday, revealed that he has a night of fashion planned called, ‘Journey of Wearable Art’ through Indian and Urban fashion billed for the Aracari Resort on October 24. The designers in the line-up are mostly drawn from GFW 2008, but he has added a few new names.
Moore said there are very few local models that “can walk on the catwalk and make us believe in the clothes and them”, and stressed that the time has come for models to be trained to walk the runway. He recalled his involvement in a modeling agency many years ago that groomed some of the best local catwalk models, according to him.
For his GFW double dose he has raked in the likes of Melessa Payne, or rather, Guyana’s finest model and other notable faces such as Keane Andrews and Miss Guyana World 2007, Candace Charles.
He explained that the fashion show at Aracari is part of a broader entertainment schedule that is set for October 24, noting that a ticket allows patrons to digest the fashion show; take in comedy from Chow Pow and the music of Rajesh Dubraj and the dances of Apex Dance Troupe and the Crystallite Dancers.
“We are hoping to create a feel of excitement and also to deliver show that the public will enjoy and feel like they have been to something,” Moore added.
The event is being coordinated by Moore, Kirk Jardine and Anthony Snow. Some of the designers in the line-up include Moore; Marcie DeSantos; Olympia Small-Sonaram; Andrew Harris; Chandini Ramnarain and Keisha Edwards.
He said the event gets underway at 8 pm sharp and that corporate Guyana is already on board, sponsors include El Dorado Rum, Carib Beer and Giftland.
Tickets cost $1,000 and $1,500 for VIP and are on sale at M&M Snackette at Bagotstown and Tiwari’s Drug Store at Vreed-en-hoop.
