Guyana’s bantamweight boxer Clevon Rock
Guyana’s hopes of a gold medal went down at the third junior Commonwealth Games in Pune, India were dashed when Clevon Rock lost his bantamweight encounter with Englishman John Quigley.
Rock, who was one of eight athletes from Guyana who participated in the October 12-18 games and the only one to win a medal, lost his gold medal bout to Quigley 1-12.
Rock is one of only four Caribbean athletes to win medals at the games following gold medals from Kirani James of Grenada in the 400m, Kierre Beckles of Barbados in the 100m hurdles and Jason Rogers of St Kitts/Nevis who won a bronze medal in the 100m.
According to reports Rock fought a classical fight but could not score against the more tactical Englishman Quigley.
In the first round Quigley registered two scoring shots to take the first round 2:0.
In the second round the Englishman managed to add another three scoring shots to take the round 3-0.
In round three, the tiring Guyanese allowed Quigley to score five unanswered points and he racked up a 5:0 round to take a 10:0 lead entering the final round.
The resilient Rock though would not go down without a fight and battling like the true “Rock” he is, lost the final round 1:2. Rock is the first Guyanese Commonwealth Youth Games medalist. Guyana’s Trenace Lowe reached the last eight in the table tennis competition.
