– cart off equipment, clients’ hair extensions
Beauticians attached to the North American Salon on Robb Street are counting their losses after unknown persons broke into the building over the weekend and carted off more than $1.5 million in items, which included their equipment, appliances and a generator.
It is believed that the break-in age occurred between the wee hours of Sunday and yesterday. The thieves gained entry by cutting a padlock on a grilled backdoor.
When Stabroek News visited the Lot 48 Robb Street Lacy town location, the four hairdressers, nail technician and other employees were sitting around contemplating their next move. They have been reduced to nothing as the thieves looted their stock of hair extensions, some of which belonged to clients, electrical stoves, curling irons, nail buffing machine, flat irons and other items. They even broke open padlocks to gain entry into cupboards where some of the stock was kept.
Police have since visited and are conducting investigations.
One of the employees told this newspaper that when she opened the front gate around 8.15 am yesterday, she immediately noticed that the back door was wide open. The front door was closed as per normal.
The woman said she immediately ran over to a nearby building where the security guard assisted her with a telephone call to the person in charge of the salon. Then, accompanied by the security guard, she went into the building and found small items, inclusive of false nails scattered all over the floor. The generator, which was left behind the front door and the television set were missing.
When the persons in charge arrived, the police were called in.
Another employee said they worked late on Saturday and closed the salon around midnight. No one in the area recounted seeing anything suspicious though it would have taken the thieves some time to fetch out the numerous articles stolen and they would have made some noise as they tumbled and broke locks. A vehicle might have also been used to transport the loot, particularly the television set and generator.
This is the fifth robbery the salon has endured in its six years of existence; the most recent being last September. (Zoisa Fraser)
