Digicel celebrated Word Food Day 2008 by providing meals for 60 residents at the Dharm Shala in addition to a monetary donation to assist with administration costs.
In a press release, Head of Marketing Donovan White said rising food prices have made it increasingly difficult for some families to access three basic meals per day and as such Digicel decided to provide a meal for persons whom the charity serves daily. “We are even more elated that some of our staff volunteered to provide comfort and care to the less fortunate. They had the opportunity to bring a little joy into the lives of the inmates … and that is truly priceless.”
White said Digicel is committed to supporting the Dharm Shala and other homes including children’s homes and encouraged other organisations to emulate its example.
Co-ordinator of the Dharm Shala Kella Ramsaroop whose grandfather founded the charity, thanked Digicel for its support. Ramsaroop said, “Millions of people don’t get one meal a day, even persons right here in Guyana. We…believe that everyone has the right to food and shelter.”
