Dear Editor,
As a resident of Stevedore Housing Scheme it is unbelievable that in these modern times when hygiene is considered one of the most effective means of removing Environmental Pollution, organizations such as the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) have failed to observe the most important element in sanitation.
It is my understanding that the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) is responsible for the removal of garbage, clearing of drains and canals. Further, solid waste when left unmoved becomes hazardous to the community and city at large.
The hazards mentioned above lead to the blocking of drainage and the harbouring of unwanted pests, insects, bacteria and viruses.
For instance when no work is done to the community for a long period in the area of sanitation there is always an outbreak of diseases such as: dengue fever and to some extent malaria not to mention the most serious of all things such as cholera and leptospirosis. This is evidence of municipal neglect even though large sums of money are collected on a regular basis by the said organization, rates and taxes, government subventions and also public donations.
It is time and most fitting to say that the Mayor and City Council should stand up to its responsibility to the citizenry of Georgetown and constantly and vigilantly effect regular works to the communities within the municipality ensuring that all environmental pollution or any such thing that can cause environmental pollution is removed.
Yours faithfully,
Rochelle Eversley
