Alpha United are still one point ahead of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) in the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) organized Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GT&T) Cellink Plus Premier League competition after the completion of Saturday night’s matches.
Alpha United who began the night with 27 points defeated third place occupants Sunburst Camptown 2 – 0 in the feature match of the triple-header card.
In the other results, GDF defeated Pele 2 -1 while the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) and Uprising drew 1 – 1.
Alpha owes their success in large measure to top striker Anthony `Awo’ Abrams whose double strike sank Sunburst Camptown.
Abrams’ first goal came as early as the fourth minute when he buried a penalty in the back of the net after he was brought down in the 18-yard box.
Abrams then rubbed salt into the fourth minute wound a mere three minutes later, and, the game was effectively over within the first 10 minutes as Sunburst Camptown were never able to make up the deficit.
In the GDF/ Pele encounter, Pele’s Solomon Austin 11th minute goal shook the army team early and Pele was able to hold onto their lead at half time.
However, Gavin Wilson equalised for the GDF in the 77th minute before Dwight Peters scored the match winning goal in the 89th minute.
With the victory, the GDF moved to 29 points.
In the encounter between GFC and Uprising which commenced at 4pm, Uprising struck first when Travis James found the back of the net in the 13th minute to put GFC behind but GFC did not have to wait long for the equaliser as Michael Rowe produced a shocker for Uprising the very next minute.
Each of the top three teams has one game remaining and as such, the league is set for a nail-biting finale.
The points’ standings are, Alpha United, 30, GDF, 29, Camptown, 26, GFC, 18, Fruta Conquerors, 16, Pele, 13, Santos, 6 and Uprising 5 points. (KB)
