Unbeaten half centuries from Shemroy Barrington and Devon Clements saw Lance Gibbs’ Tigers reaching 167-1 at the close of the second day’s play of the President’s Cup competition and made sure that the former West Indies off-spinner would not be disappointed with their display.
Batting a second time after Clive Lloyd’s Super Cats were dismissed for 373, Barrington and Clements featured in an unbroken second wicket stand of 134 runs as Lance Gibbs Tigers erased all but 24 of the 191-run deficit.
Barrington and Chandrika opened the batting the second time around after Sewnarine Chattergoon’s injured left thumb made him unable to bat at his customary position.
The Lance Gibbs Tigers were soon in trouble as Chandrika was caught behind by Derwin Christian off the bowling of off-spinner Zaheer Mohamed for 12 with the score on 33.
Barrington and Clements rebuilt the innings with attacking play.
Barrington who attacked from the start of his innings marched to his half century (with the score on 96) and was unbeaten on 78 at stumps.
He was lucky to be put down by Christian off a sharp edge from Steven Jacobs but Clements was solid throughout and was unbeaten on 63.
Barrington’s knock was decorated with 10 fours while Clements counted a majestic straight driven six and 10 fours.
The only wicket taker in the innings was Zaheer Mohamed who returned the figures of 8-0-29-1 as the rest of the Super Cats bowlers toiled. Earlier, the Clive Lloyd Super Cats resumed their innings on 168-4 with captain Leon Johnson and Hoomchand Pooran not out on 47 and 29 respectively ended on 373 with Johnson making 88 emblazoned with 15 boundaries before he was lbw to Brendon Bess.
Pooran went on to make 79 with 11 boundaries before he too was lbw to Seon Daniels after he and Johnson had added 140 runs for the fifth wicket.
Wicketkeeper Delbert Hicks and Esaun Crandon added 42 runs for the ninth wicket before Hicks was needlessly run out for 30 while last man Mohammed and Crandon eked out another 30 priceless runs before Mohammed was last out caught by Krishna Deosarran off Devendra Bishoo for 12.
Crandon was left not out on 22.
Daniels picked up 2-44, Ryan Hercules 2-46, Bishoo 2-59 and Bess 2-89.
