The Guyana Police Force yesterday successfully defended their title against the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Guyana Fire Service (GFS) and the Guyana Prison Service (GPS), when the annual Inter-Services Athletics Championships culminated at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve – Leary yesterday.
The GPF amassed a mammoth 596 points to not only arrest their opponents, but also cart off the 2008 title ahead of the GDF who finished second with 403 points, GFS (215) and the GPS (153).
GDF were crowned the victors in the march past while the GPF, GFS and GPS finished in second, third an fourth respectively.
GPF’s Larry Josiah and Natasha Alder claimed the outstanding male and female awards, Josiah won the male 1500m and 5000m then placed second in male 800m. He was also a member of the 4x400m and 1500m Medley relay teams, which was won by the GPF.
Alder on the other hand won the female 200m, Javelin and also competed in the 4x100m relay which her team won.
The Guyana Police Force performed a clean sweep in the Male 100m and 200m, with Keith Roberts claiming the 100m ahead of Michael Saul and Trevor Benn. Saul turned the tables in the 200m on Roberts and Benn.
GPF’s Shivonne Fraser won the female 100m ahead of GDF’s Wanita Wayne and Sheron Thompson. Wayne and Thompson then finished first and second respectively in the female 200m behind Alder.
Samantha Williams and her GPF team mate Stacy Wilson carted off the 800m ahead of GDF’s Eva Harry who later won the 1500m female.
There were invitational male and female events which were also contested such as the male and female 100m and 400m and cycling events.
Darren Allen rolled away with the four, six and ten laps cycle races ahead of Lear Nunes who had to settle for second in all three of the events. The one handed rider Walter Grant-Short was also a contender in the six and ten lap events where he managed to placed third in both.
Rawle Greene and Alisha Fortune dominated the Invitational Male and Female 100m while Patrick King and Shauna Thornhill won the Invitational Male and Female 400m respectively.
Honorable President Bharat Jagdeo was on hand to witness the conclusion of the championships and took the time to commended all the athletes and organizers for a day of events well ran and wished them the best for the upcoming years.
