Wife sent to and fro by police
A bus conductor is nursing three wounds to the left side of his abdomen after being stabbed at a barbecue in Sophia.
Trevolta Peters, 29, called John of D Field, Sophia underwent emergency surgery mid-morning yesterday after doctors realized he was bleeding internally from the wounds he sustained around 9:30 on Saturday night.

At the hospital yesterday Peters said that he was in severe pain and motioned to his tummy which was heavily bandaged.

According to Peters’ wife, Samantha Cornette, the man was stabbed by the boyfriend of a girl with whom he had a run-in on Friday. Peters is the conductor of his own mini-bus which runs the Sophia route. On Friday two young women travelled with the bus and when they reached their location exited the vehicle without paying the required fare. Cornette said that her husband did not bother to “fight them down” for the money but proceeded on his way.

On Saturday night, Cornette explained that they attended a barbecue and the two young women were there with a male in their company. She said that Peters went over to the “chic chic” board and played a game which he won. This drew some taunting from one of the women, who said “oh yuh win we coulda rob yuh more.” She said that she was looking on at everything and heard when her husband told the woman that he was not looking for trouble. By then the man who stabbed him walked up and told Peters not to “wrong talk to she cause yuh gon have to talk to me.” At this point Peters walked off to stand by his bus which was parked a short distance away.

Cornette said that she stayed by the board and told the girl that “y’all wrong and want play right.” Her husband came back and told her not to bother with them. While the couple was walking away, Cornette said she saw the flash of metal and within seconds the man stabbed Peters three times, and ran off with his other companions. Two friends who were at the barbecue came to the man’s rescue transporting him to the Georgetown Hospital in his own minibus, while Cornette travelled to the Sophia police station to make a report.

“When I reach deh they tell me that only one police here and if me husband get admit [to the hospital] I must come back tomorrow [yesterday].” The woman said that she then took a taxi to the hospital. When the man finished receiving treatment and sent to the open ward she left again for the station. This was around 1:40 am and she was told this time that she needed someone who could identify the perpetrators and who knew where they live to assist the police yesterday morning.

Cornette explained that she could not go to the police station the next morning since she had to go the hospital. However she sent Peters’ friend who was at the barbecue, had seen everything and knew where the perpetrator lives. The friend, Andray Benjamin, told Stabroek News that he was told to return, which he did twice more that day but nothing was done. “The police deh tell me it only got one rank manning the place and when I see the person [who stabbed Peters] I must go and tell them,” Benjamin related.

Around 11 am Peters was rushed for emergency surgery when doctors realized he was bleeding internally. Upon hearing of this Cornette rushed to the station again and was told the same thing. She said that she then made her way to Eve Leary and the officers there called the police at Sophia and were told that there was only one rank on duty and he could not leave to investigate the matter.
“No officer ain’t come yet to take a statement from meh husband or do nothing else,” Cornette lamented yesterday afternoon at the hospital, where a number of relatives and friends gathered around the bed of the injured man.

The couple along with their two children only moved to Sophia some two months ago. They formerly lived on the Essequibo Coast. (Melissa Charles)
