Promising long-distance runner Janella Jonas was adjudged the top finisher in the girls’ 14-20 category at the sixth annual IAAF South American 10K Road Race Classic which took place on Sunday.
According to the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) five Guyanese were the top finishers in that category.
Jonas ran away with the top prize in 41:11.20s ahead Jervina Straker, 48:04.80s, Jenelle Ernest, 42:25.70s, Shebekie Prince, 52:36.50s and Samilyn Fordyce, 52:43.50s.
Guyanese athletes also occupied the top five places in the boys’ 14-20 age category.
Quinn George 35:24.00s, was the winner followed by Jonathan Fagundes, 35:40.20s, Pierre Tello, 37:47.70s, Michael Thomas, 38:55.90s and Mark Lord, 39:36.20s.
The top three finishers in these two categories received US$300, US$200 and US$100 respectively along with trophies while those finishing fourth and fifth were awarded trophies only.
Henry Shepherd, Gregory Wickham, Maurice Julian and Franklin Roger finished first to fourth in the Masters 40-49 age category with times of 43:37.40s, 43:50.00, 43:52.70s and 48:27.80s respectively while Llewellyn Gardner, Maurice Fagundes, Deonarine, Curtis and Franklin Archer competed in the Masters 50-70 division and finished with times of 39:05.90s,46:21.10s, 51:56.10s, 54:41.70 and 56:34.90s respectively.
The Masters’ categories top finishers also received trophies.
Antonia Silva (Bra), Alika Morgan (Guy), Kerticha John (T&T), Ashanti Scott (Guy) and Christine Regis (T&T) were the top five finishers in the women’s international while Cleveland Forde (Guy), Pamenos Ballantyne (St. Vin), Richard Jones (T&T), Gustavo Pereira (Bra) and Lionel D’Andrade (Guy) occupied the top five spots in the male international Open.
The international male and female top finishers received US$1000, US$600, US$400, US$300 and US$200 respectively.
