A policeman working at a barbecue held at Canefield, East Canje Berbice on Tuesday night was stabbed in the chest with a broken bottle after he warned a patron about throwing lighted squibs.
Constable 17310 Williams was taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he received medical attention for his injuries. His attacker is in police custody assisting with investigations.
Police last evening said that they are investigating an incident that occurred at about 8.30 pm during which a police rank on duty was stabbed in his chest with a broken bottle.
Investigations have so far revealed that Constables 17310 Williams and 19185 Fredericks were on duty at the barbecue when they observed a man throwing a lighted squib into the crowd of patrons. Constable Williams then warned the man to desist from his actions.
Another man who was in his company objected and began to verbally abuse the rank during which he chucked Constable Williams.
The man who was objecting later ran into his residence nearby and returned with two broken bottles and “unexpectedly” stabbed Constable Williams to his chest. He then attempted to stab Constable Fredericks who discharged a round from his service revolver into the air, whereupon the man dropped the broken bottles and escaped. He was later arrested and is in police custody.
