It was very nice to see the coverage of Diwali in the Guyana Chronicle on October 29. The nicely decorated floats, the celebrants in their saris, lenghas and kurtas, the families shown lighting diyas in their homes, really captured the spirit of Diwali.
However, I was very disappointed that the Stabroek News carried no coverage. Maybe the editor of that newspaper should comment as to why he saw it fit to completely disregard this event, which is an integral part of Guyanese culture.

Mr Singh does not appear to have read the Stabroek News at all before writing this letter. On October 28 the front-page photo was of a float from the motorcade, and there was also a photo of members of staff of the Caricom Secretariat wearing Indian dress on page 12. This was quite apart from the 12-page supplement on Diwali which covered such subjects as making mud diyas and designing motorcades; traditions in the Hindu kitchen; and Diwali celebrations in the tri-state area.
There was also an article on ‘Deepawali’ by Pt Prakash Gossai. The following day a large front-page photograph showed diyas being lit in Hunter Street, Albouystown, while other photos appeared on pages 3, 12 and 13, in addition to pictures of the motorcade on the centre pages.
