The Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTYSC)/ Pepsi under-19 team defeated the Williamsburg Change Your Life Christian Church (WCYLCC) in a 40-over match to lift RHT/Williamsburg Friendship Trophy on Tuesday at the Area ‘H’ Ground.
Batting first after winning the toss, WCYLCC made 142 for 8 off their allotted 40 overs with 46-years-old Patrick Lewis hitting 30, Shawn Pereira 25 and Pastor Kevin Pereira an unbeaten 20.
Bowling for RHT Pepsi Simon Lawson took 3-32, Leon Crawford 2-18 and Terrence Madramootoo 2 -16 and in reply, RHT/Pepsi were given a rousing start of 56 from eight overs by Lawson (35) and national under-15 opening batsman Dominic Rickey before Lawson was given out leg before wicket to Shawn Pereira.
Madramootoo then blazed himself to 52 not out before he and Rickey, who was unbeaten on 30, were asked to retire to allow the other batsmen to bat. This caused a mini-collapse, but RHT Pepsi eventually ended on 145 for 6 in 23.5 overs to win by four wickets.
Bowling for the WCYLC, Suresh Gwensammy took 3 for 11 and Patrick Lewis 2 for 37.
Pastor Kevin Pereirra thanked both teams for playing the game in a disciplined and cordial atmosphere and stated that the match was part of his church’s mission to spread the word of God to youths via sports.
He congratulated the RHT/Pepsi team for winning the Friendship Trophy and singled out Lawson, Madramootoo and Rickey as players with a bright future. Skipper Madramootoo noted that his team was delighted to play the match and called for more matches of its kind where youths are challenged to serve God and his teachings.
